The island of Bahamas is currently leading the way in Beach Soccer having hosted the 2018 FIFA Beach Soccer  Cup and continuing to promote the sport with various international events at its world class Beach Soccer Stadium at the Sidney Poitier Bridge in Nassau.

This weekend, the Bahamas Football Association in collaboration with Beach Soccer Worldwide is hosting the Bahamas Beach Soccer Cup with participating countries such as Colombia, Costa Rica, Turks and Caicos, Trinidad and Tobago and the hosts.

And with the recent appointment of Trinidadian Sham Mohammed as President of the Caribbean Region for Beach Soccer Worldwide, the sport could be heading in an even greater direction in our region with some added stakes

T&T has performed relatively decent in past Concacaf Beach Soccer qualifiers but has not been able to make the final jump to the next level. The Women’s team is now developing but soon T&T could end up in different destinations across the globe through Mohammed’s involvement. His intention is promote and develop the game intensely in the Caribbean. Beach Soccer Worldwide is known for throwing electrifying events in several attractive locations such as Dubai, Brazil, Colombia, Portugal, Italy, Moldova, Russia among others for both club and country.

T&T will have the chance to vie for qualification for the Beach Soccer competition at the World Beach Games in Bali next year with a qualifying competition likely to take place in 2023.

Mohammed has also been given rights  to promote, manage and distribute other events such as Beach Tennis, ATP and WTA Tennis events, ITF events, Beach Volleyball, Volleyball, Basketball, Futsal, Football 7s and World Beach Games through a partnership with Koch Tavares and his own T&T-based company Miscellaneous Marketing Limited.

Playing beach soccer is a great way to help increase a player’s  technique, decision making with the ball, creativity, and cardiovascular aspects endurance. Running through the sand demands more resistance from your quads and hamstrings – while playing in the sand your legs will sink in, this requires you to pull your legs out of the sand and push against it in order to move out.

Many professional grass field football players who are coming back from an injury and are recovery, play in the sand in order to strengthen up there muscles as quickly as possible. As well as this, beach soccer helps joints and articulations, which is why it is so helpful to cover faster from an injury. These are all areas that Mohammed wants to tap into.

“We have an opportunity to not only grow the sport but there are several other attractions we can bring to the Caribbean that will make it more than a game on sand. The level of events that Beach Soccer Worldwide is capable of putting on is first class and all the ingredients makes it into an exciting, fun filled and eye catching occasion for the fans while the players are given a high level of exposure,” Mohammed said.

“Now we also have the opportunity to stage top level tennis events and other major sports through our affiliation with Koch Tavares and its President Luis Felipe Tavarez, himself a former world ranked tennis player for Brazil. Luis sees great potential in the Caribbean for these type of events and we are embarking on a campaign to really bring some enticing action to the region of sun, sand and sea. It’s a perfect match in our part of the world,” he added. Tavares is also one of the founding members of ATP Tennis Association.

Tavares along with partner Thomaz Koch founded the Koch Tavarez which is a world renowned Sport Marketing and Promotion company. Like Tavares, Koch is  another former Brazilian tennis player who played at the Wimbledon,US and French Open where he was once a quarter finalist. Both men expanded their involvement into other major sports and world events.  In the past Koch Tavares has been responsible for negotiating sponsorship deals for the Brazilian Football Confederation, in particular their Senior Men’s National Team including Gillette and Volkswagon deals. Koch Tavares also staged the Gillette Federer tour in Brazil in 2012 ans has worked with several major international golf tournaments such as the US and British Open.

“We have a wonderful opportunity to add bring a lot more to the region through our affiliation with Koch Tavares. We are already meeting other some stakeholders in the Caribbean to make some of this a reality  and see how can move ahead,” Mohammed added.
