T&T’s Sham Mohammed named President of Spanish Football Club near Malaga

Trinidad and Tobago businessman and club owner of Miscellaneous Laventille United has been named the President of Spanish Club CD Atletico Torroxeno on a four-year term.

Mohammed who is the CEO of Miscellaneous Marketing Limited, titled sponsor of Police FC in the TT Premier League Tier 1, was official unveiled at the City Hall in Torrox on Tuesday following a meeting with the Mayor of Torrox Oscar Medina.

Torrox is a municipality in the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. It is located in the Costa del Sol (specifically the Costa del Sol Oriental), on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara.

Torroxeno is well known for its beach soccer, campaigning in the Spanish Beach Soccer League 1, under the guidance of former Brazil Beach Soccer 4-time World Cup champion Alexendre Soares.

Medina has offered Torroxeno its facilities for regular 11v11 football which includes a current stadium with Futsal facilities, gymnasium and aquacenter. The city council is also close to completing the construction of a new football stadium in Torrox. This will provide state of the art training facilities for international teams seeking a venue for overseas training camps.

“It is an honour for me to receive this opportunity to serve as President of Torroxeno, a Spanish club affiliated with the Spanish Football Association. It’s not often such an opportunity comes around,”Mohammed said on Friday following a meeting with Mayor Medina.

Medina welcomed Mohammed, saying “I welcome and I give thanks to Sham Mohammed and thanks to Trinidad and Tobago for this partnership. I know he is very committed to developing the sport of football and beach soccer in Torrox. And it’s an opportunity to develop Torrox and Trinidad and Tobago which we welcome.”

Mohammed went onto say, “The Beach Soccer here is already established but the doors being opened for the regular football are tremendous. The climate in Torrox is described as one of the best in Europe all year round.

Torrox is 30 minutes from Malaga and 90 minutes from Granada and has already established relationships with the professional clubs of both cities.

Torroxeno is a registered club with the Royal Andalusian Football Federation which is the football association responsible for all competitions of any form of football developed in Andalusia. It is integrated into the Royal Spanish Football Federation and its headquarters are located in Seville and has offices in the capitals of the provinces.

“The sites and beaches are second to none and the facilities currently existing and also being upgraded with great hotel options. This is ideal for international teams looking for a location for training camps that are not among the obvious options now,” added Mohammed who has also served as Vice President of Beach Soccer Worldwide Foundation.

“Our intention is to provide the right settings, facilities and overall environment for this.”

“For some time I have been looking for new and improved ways to help with developing our football, our teams and players where possible with new options or opportunities outside of Trinidad and Tobago.

“Of course this is something I have spent a lot of time thinking about and ensuring that the right steps were taken to get to this point of being able to lead the club.”

Mohammed emphasized on the potential to provide playing and training opportunities for players in T&T, Caribbean and other parts of Concacaf.

“Alot of talks have been held about setting up training and scouting opportunities for our players in the region. While we may not be in the top tier at the moment, the possibilities are endless with proper planning and execution for our 11v11 and Beach Soccer players,” he said.

“Our relationship with the Mayor of Torrox Mr Medina as well as the City’s Tourism Director Daniela Kewitsch who is German, has been very solid and they are very opened to our ideas of sport tourism through football as well as in musical entertainment.”

With an average year round temperature of 18ºC, Torrox is described as a land of eternal spring and has become the jewel in the crown of the Costa del Sol by managing to always be warm.

Back on the coast, Torrox Costa is a popular coastal strip, particularly with holidaymakers who flock here during the summer, with a choice of hotels and accommodation available.
